Cookies

This page says what this website stores on your device and what it asks other servers for. It is short because the answer is short.

Cookies only if you agree

This site sets no cookies of its own. The first time you visit, a banner asks whether you agree to analytics. If you choose “Accept”, Google Analytics sets its cookies (_ga and _ga_FPBZW91NRE) to count visits and see which pages are read. If you choose “Decline”, nothing is set and nothing is sent. Your choice is remembered in your browser’s storage on this site, so you are not asked on every page. To change it, clear this site’s data in your browser, and the banner will ask again.

Analytics, and nothing else

The one third-party script on this website is Google Analytics, provided by Google LLC, and it loads only after you accept. There is no tag manager, no advertising pixel and no embedded widget. All three font files — the design’s two typefaces and the Arabic one — are served from this site rather than from a font network, so not even a request for a font leaves for anyone else.

What does leave this site

Five things, and each only because you asked for it.

  • The photographs on the blog are served from the content system this company runs for its own website. Your browser fetches each picture from that server, and that server records the request the way any web server does — the address it came from, the browser that made it, and the time.
  • Links inside an article go where they say they go. Following one takes you to somebody else’s website, under their terms and their privacy notice rather than ours.
  • If you sign up to the newsletter or to the app list, what you type is sent from this site’s server to Mailchimp, the service that delivers our newsletter, and to no one else. Mailchimp then emails you a link to confirm: until you click it you are not on the list, and every newsletter carries a link to leave it. To stop the form being abused, this site’s server keeps the network address a sign-up came from in memory for ten minutes, and does not record it anywhere.
  • If you send an event enquiry or a job application, what you type into that form, and your CV, is sent from this site’s server to our events or hiring team by email, through Mailchimp Transactional, the service that delivers it, and to no one else. This site keeps no copy. To stop the form being abused, this site’s server keeps the network address it came from in memory for ten minutes, and does not record it anywhere.
  • If you accept analytics, your browser sends Google Analytics which pages you open, with an identifier it stores in its own cookies. If you decline, it sends nothing.

If that ever changes

Adding anything else — an embedded map or video, or a marketing tag — would either put something on your device or contact somebody else on your behalf. None of it is on this website today, and none of it can be added without this page changing first and a way to refuse it appearing beside it.
