The Early Royal Years

The Menu

Rowley’s Restaurant at 113 Jermyn Street has been open for 50 years, located in the building where the Walls meat business started. Richard Wall, apprenticed in 1790, took over by 1807. From 1812 to 1901, the business earned Royal Appointments under King George IV through King Edward VII. Richard’s grandsons, Thomas and Frederick, later managed the shop. Frederick sourced meat from Smithfield Market, while Thomas balanced the business with his duties as a Westminster Councillor.

Thomas Wall was equally busy, and not just in the butchery business. He could regularly be seen immaculately dressed in morning coat and silk hat, attending to his duties as the Councillor for the Borough of Westminster. He became a Victorian gentleman of appointment and importance.

Keeping it in the family

Rowley’s Restaurant has grown to become a St James’ institution, famed for a range of delicious steak and fries upon which it has built a 50-year reputation as one of the capital’s finest steak restaurants.
